Wheat Harvest

The first harvest of the season is happening! 

With about 20 acres of wheat that Travis farms we made the decision to hire our neighbor to come combine it for us. We recently just purchased a new combine and instead of pulling it out, make all the adju to adjust it all for wheat we decided it was much easier to have our neighbor who also combines several acres of his own wheat to do it. Without getting too into the details our newer combine chops up the straw stubble more which would cause us to not get as good of pieces to bale with later.

As farmer's we're always looking for ways to use every last bit of the crops that we plant and harvest. Part of using everything and not letting anything go to waste is baling up the "trash" or part of the crop that isn't harvested and sold at COOP. We like to bale straw bales to use for cattle bedding and normally a 20 acre field could last us several years worth of small square bales.

Benefits of Compression Sleeves

I've seen my serious running friends are sporting the compression sleeves and socks and I was intrigued by them. I mean, they look super important and I assume they have to work if so many people are using them. So I did a little digging and a few social media calls for input to see what others thought about them and also used a pair of sleeves I got in one of my StrideBox's to do a little research of my own. Oh, and notice the running belt? Ya, I should probably do a review on that baby as well eh?!
- Protection against scratches from branches or bugs. Every runner knows that trees on trails are a pain in the butt, sometimes arm sleeves can help prevent some scratches. And bugs, I'm not sure about you guys but bugs are always chasing after me, this is perfect to help keep them away from me.

- Reduced recovery time for sore muscles. It's obvious that your muscles get tired after extended periods of running, this helps to reduce the amount of time your muscles spend recovering from those longer runs. If you're muscles are under compression sleeves they don't "flop around" as much meaning less time getting them back to normal.

- Improved circulation throughout entire body. With your arms being compressed it helps to keep your blood flowing to the rest of your body, compression is your friend!!

- Reduced chance of muscle strains/tears. Again, this is due to the compression keeping your muscles together and not loose, tight muscles result in less chances of wear and tear on them over extended periods of time working out.

- Extra warmth on longer runs and workouts. Because some days in the early spring in fall I'm just not feeling the full sweater or long sleeves. My core is warm enough but my blood flow to my arms makes my arms feel cold. These babies are just perfect for that reason!

- Layer of sun protection during outdoor runs. They do give you some pretty nifty tan lines if you wear them often, I guess it gives you a reverse farmer tan, something fun to look at! But it is important to keep track of the sun, burns can really reduce your ability to focus your body's energy on running and endurance if you're pouring it all into recovering from a sunburn. 
- Reduced amount of muscle swelling. Less swelling ties into the smaller recovery time! Anytime you're moving and working muscles you have muscle fatigue due to them wanting to grow and get stronger. If you keep compression on it then they really have no where to go so they stay in place, reducing swelling! Makes sense to me but not sure I'm getting the point across?!

- Keeps moisture off your arms. This is really just an added benefit and not something oober important. I really hate the feeling of sweat just hanging out on me so these sleeves help to absorb sweat and keep it away from me!

- Ups your "hardcore runner" look on the cool scale! YES! I mean really, when you walk into a race line-up and you see someone with sleeves your mind automatically thinks, "oh great, I'm gonna lose to that guy who is a hard core runner with sleeves"... come on, admit it. It's true.
So, thoughts? Judging by the benefits of them it sounds like they'll help. I think it might partially be mind over matter but I really did feel better after running a little over 4.5 miles last night. I'd love to try out some compression socks as I think they'd be even more beneficial than sleeves so if you know of any company looking for a test dummy send them my way!

I figured to give you a better idea of what the boxes are all about I'd do my monthly review and give you my opinion's on the products!

My Review: Ok, again, I'm not sure what the deal is but I'm pretty sure between Bulu Box and StrideBox they know I like to have a good time and go out with friends and party it up. Cause this might be the third or fourth "hangover" type product I've recently recieved. And it's tough to use these when I honestly don't go out that often! I mean, yes I do go out but I normally keep the drinking under control and I don't have a need for these suckers. I hate hangovers so I pace myself and avoid them at all costs when possible. This has yet to be used so I can't give it an honest review yet but I'm certain it'll work out just fine...

My Review: These were yet another product that were tough to test out for me! I normally don't drink coffee which is great for me considering the amount of caffeine in them and also the fact that I already have terrible teeth but crappy to give you guys a review on! I did make myself some coffee just to try them so I could tell you how I felt about them and surprisingly it did just what it'd say it'd do. Be tasteless. I did notice that I must not have stirred it in quite enough because I could almost feel "chunks" in it. As for preventing stains on my teeth I really couldn't tell a major difference but I gave it a try and the others are sitting patiently waiting for me to make more coffee so they get their chance to be tried out!

3. Fruit.O in Mango Pear Pineapple- A more convenient way to snack, Fruit.O pouches are made using organic fruits including mangos, blackberries and bananas with none of the artificial stuff. Swap out your afternoon vending machine run for Fruit.O. Priced at $22.99 for 10 pouches. My Review: I'm already in love with the Buddy brand of these pouches I buy at Wal-Mart so anytime something new comes out I like to get all super comparative about it and try to find a reason to love what I already know. Well, amazingly, I did like these almost as much. I didn't like how runny the fruit was, it was a little too liquidy and not a paste like my ol Buddies are. BUT, I did like the flavors! Anything pineapple is my friend and when I read mango on things I get worried because sometimes mango can be good but other products it tastes horrible. Looking at the ingredient list I'm impressed, mangoes, pears, pineappl juice and lemon juice. Pretty simple and that's the way I like my ingredient list, easy to read!!

4. Rainbow Light Advanced Enzyme System- Ease digestive discomfort and distress for a more balanced body. Advanced Enzyme System uses 10 potent types of plant-based enzymes to help your body better breakdown proteins, fats and complex carbohydrates. Give your tummy total relief from discomfort and keep things running smoothly. Priced at $20.99 for 90 capsules. My Review: This time I will whole heartily admit I did not even take the time to try this out. I don't have any issues with tummy discomforts so I just skipped it completely. If you're reading this and tend to have tummy issues shoot me an email with your addy and I'll go ahead and send this product your way so it doesn't go to waste! I'd hate for it to not get used but I just won't use it. See, there's always that "one item" in the box that I won't use and it just so happened to be this one! It just didn't fit me, but that doesn't mean the others who received it won't love it! Just part of the fun of trying new things :)

5. Grandma's Lye Soap- Some soaps can irritate skin. Grandma's Lye Soap gives your skin a soft, squeaky clean feeling with no detergent residue. Grandma's only uses three ingredients so you know the soap you're using is just a soap. Priced at $15.00 for three 6oz bars. My Review: Who doesn't love a new bar of soap!? I can remember my grandma making lye soap so this was an exciting one to test out!! I'm not sure I can describe the soap smell besides waxy? It also flaked off the bar while pulling it out of the package but with ingredients as simple as lard, lye and water I guess that'd make sense. Seriously, that was all that was listed as ingredients, I love it! Along with a fun little card with information it also had a 20% off coupon included! That's a win in my books and the prices are extremely reasonable considering it takes me awhile to use up a full bar of soap. I love that it recommends using this soap if you have dry skin or get rashes easily. I have border line eczema skin so anything that helps me out is something I take into consideration! For sure loving this product!

6. Promax Low Sugar Bar in Peanut Butter Cookie Dough- The delicious flavors of Promax protein bars now with less sugar. Promax Low Sugar Bars pack 18 grams of protein with 14 grams of regulating fiber. Promax Low Sugar are gluten-free and contain no artificial sweeteners. Priced at $27.60 for 12 bars. My Review: I've tried so many chocolate "health" or protein bars and gels that I truly despise these things. Some chocolates are so fake and disgusting that they've kind of ruined me but I gave it a try to be a sport and tell you guys how I felt about it. I could for sure tastes the peanut butter and the cookie dough was faint but I could still find it in the taste. The only thing I disliked was the texture of the bar, it was kinda like a crunch type bar yet still soft. I really hate hard crunch bars so to me that wasn't very appealing but otherwise, pretty easy to get through. The chocolate wasn't too fake tasting either which is always an added bonus for me.

And of course you want to see me munching on some of these yummy products and testing them out right?! Alright fiiiine, here you go. The rest will be added once I hunt them down but here's one to laugh at. Enjoy!



I personally have loved each and every box I've gotten over the past few months. Not only do I get to try out NEW products in trial sizes but I get to see what I don't like and what would be worth purchasing a full size product of. I realize that not all of the products are for me but I always seem to find that over half of the box I did enjoy and the things I didn't enjoy were still worth a try.

Summer Book Challenge -Update-

Did you notice something new over here at KUWKels?! If you noticed that I re-did a few things congrats you're very observant! I tried changing a few font colors but Blogger is being goofy and won't let me change them even after I save the new colors so I might just stay colorful for awhile! 


So it's the beginning of the FINAL month and to hold myself a little more accountable I want to try to do a monthly update to see where I'm at and track my progress. I realize I totally slacked on the update thing so I wanted to try to do an update in hopes of maybe finishing up a few extra books in time! To give you a review on my books I've chosen I'll post them first and then give you the update.

And on another note, does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy cheap/free audiobooks? I'm wanting to venture out of my comfort zone and try one or two for when I'm running, see if it's something I'd be interested in. Lemme know your thoughts!!

I'm pretty proud of myself so far. I didn't expect to finish so many books so fast. Here's a little review on each book that I've finished up to this point:

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen This book was awesome! I really didn't expect to love it, and I actually couldn't get into it the first time I picked it up but once I got through the first few chapters it became interesting. I'm not sure I've ever seen the movie but I remember it being really big and talked about at one point. The main summary of the book is that its about a college kid who had his parents die in a tragic accident and then him finding out his family has nothing that the bank took it all. He runs away by jumping onto a train which he later discovers to be a circus train and then kind of "joins the circus" unintentionally. The behind the scenes look at what goes on during the shows is fun and I love the twisted love story that slowly unfolds between the main character and one of the circus entertainers. This book was awesome and now I'm really excited to go see the movie to compare it to the book!!

The Reader by Bernhard Schlink 224 pages. This book was ok, it was honestly just plain weird but ironically I loved that without even knowing it I read a book about WWII history. The book's main character starts out at fourteen and is sick so he misses a lot of school. He ends up over at a lady's house who was around thirty-five and eventually they start having a sexual relationship. (Major weird I tried warning you) After months of this happening things change and she just up and leaves him. He longs to see her and eventually gets over missing her but years down the road their paths cross again. He's already divorced and has a daughter but once he starts watching a trial for some Nazi workers he soon discovers her past. He realizes there is so much more to her and finally understands why she would never open up about her past when she was with him. The book itself was very hard to read but the general concept was great. I believe +Heather Ann sent me this book, but I can't say for sure because it might have been +Sarah C. Both ladies are awesome blog buddies and I just suck at remembering things! ;) 

Wild by Cheryl Strayed 336 pages. I was honestly surprised I even liked this book! This wasn't something I would normally read and thankfully it was the only book that popped out while thumbing through this category. I struggled with it until about halfway through the book. I found myself not into the main character, she was about my age but her mother was dying of cancer and she was finding herself wanting to get a divorce. That's not even close to what's going on in my life. But the way I found us connecting is that she felt like nothing was in her control anymore. Like the only way to do something for herself was the hike the PCT trail and prove to herself that she can be in control of what's going on around her. I felt that was oober inspiring to prove that she can be a hiker, alone by herself, and show others that it's possible to do something! The book kind of drug out in parts but I found myself continuing to read because I wanted to find out how Cheryl did. I wanted to know how she over came each obstacle that came her way and lived off of a budget of literally nothing yet did something so incredible!

Alright, now it's time to get my "focus" on and really get some books crunched away this month!! I want to finish at least half the list so I need to read 3+ books to reach that goal. You'll find me in my hammock in my kiddie pool if you need me ;)
